Take care of your car after winter! Find out what to check on your car in spring to drive safely and avoid costly repairs.
Why is a spring car inspection important?
Many drivers underestimate the need to check their car after winter. However, even if the car is running ‘normally’, minor faults can turn into serious (and costly!) problems over time. The spring check-up is also an ideal opportunity to ensure your own safety and that of your passengers, as well as your driving comfort.
List of elements to be checked
Tyre condition and pressure
After winter, winter tyres should give way to summer tyres. But before you put them on:
- check tread condition (min. 1.6 mm, but better >3 mm)
- check for cracks, uneven wear
- inflate tyres in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations (in spring the pressure may vary with temperature)
Brakes
Winter is a difficult time for the braking system:
- check the condition of the discs and pads (for excessive wear)
- listen for any disturbing noises
- check the brake fluid level
Operating fluids
In winter, the engine, cooling system and other components are put under heavy use. Take care of:
- top up or replace coolant
- oil change
- windscreen washer fluid – replace winter with summer fluid
Battery
The battery may be weakened after the winter. Symptoms of problems:
- car starts more slowly
- light goes out after starting
- lights blink
It is worth checking the voltage (it should be around 12.6V at standstill) and charging the battery if necessary.
Suspension and chassis
After driving on rough roads and salt, it is a good idea to:
- have the suspension checked by a workshop
- check the condition of the shock absorbers, bushings, stabiliser links
- wash the chassis (salt can cause corrosion)
Interior and air conditioning – comfort and health
- Change the cabin filter (pollen and allergen count increases in spring)
- Clean the air vents
- If necessary, dehumidify the air conditioning – an unpleasant smell is a sign that it is time to act
Do it yourself or in a workshop?
Many of these tasks can be done yourself. However, if you don’t feel confident, it’s better to make an appointment for an inspection at an approved service centre. The cost? Between $38 and $75 – a small price to pay for peace of mind and safety.
Summary and tips
A spring spring car inspection is not an obligation, but a sensible choice. After winter, it is worth it:
- change your tyres
- look after your brakes, suspension, battery and fluids
- clean the interior and air conditioning
A well-maintained car means a safe and comfortable ride all season long. And if you’re planning further outings, it’s better to get an inspection done early before anything breaks down.
